Game of The Day #56: Fallout New Vegas

  • Release date: 2010
  • Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
  • Genre: RPG Shooter
  • Developer: Obsidian Entertainment

Fallout: New Vegas is the perfect spin-off. Obsidian Entertainment, the developers behind the game, did everything right. This is how a follow-up to a classic game like Fallout 3 is supposed to be done. It’s so good that, if Fallout 3 hadn’t come out, they could have just called Fallout: New Vegas as Fallout 3 and everyone would have been just as happy.

It’s amazing that I still find people who have not played Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas. These are two classic games that simply must be played at least once (and hopefully many times again.) Out of everyone who I’ve talked to who has played the game, only one did not like it.

So what makes Fallout: New Vegas so great? Well, they took everything that was in Fallout 3 but made it deeper. Playing in the new Hardcore mode means there’s a delay between when you take a stimpack to when it starts to take effect. You must eat food and drink water daily in order to survive. There is gambling at multiple casinos. There are multiple currencies, depending on which faction you’re working with. They got Wayne Newton to be the radio DJ. Ammo now has weight, so you can’t just carry hundreds of rounds with no penalty. You can mod weapons and craft your own ammo. Iron sights. I mean, come on!

Just like Fallout 3 I’ve spent hours combing the terrain, exploring bombed out buildings, killing mutated animals, and collecting a huge arsenal of weapons. I love the feeling of being dropped in wilderness and having to fight for survival.

If you played Fallout 3 and you liked it, buy Fallout: New Vegas today on PC, Xbox 360, or PS3. You won’t be disappointed.
