Why you need to play Drift Stage

I haven’t been this pumped about a game in a long time. Pixel Prospector posted a link to Drift Stage, a racing game in the spirit of Out Run with the graphics to boot. I’ve fallen in love with A) the concept, B) the music, C) the art style. To me, this feels like a spiritual successor to one of my favourite games of all time: Tokyo Xtreme Racer for the Dreamcast.

Billed as “modern evolution of the classic arcade racer, bringing the gameplay up to date a bit while keeping the late 80’s style intact.” Drift Stage feels a bit like FUN has returned to gaming. It’s not about numbers of polygons per second or fill rate, but pure, unadulterated fun.

No word on a release date but the developers have stated their current target platforms are PC/Mac with consoles likely to follow. They are using Unity3d to build the game, so I imagine Drift Stage will see light on consoles in the future, especially since arcade racers play best on those platforms.

I love it. I can’t wait for it to come out.
